Shibuya's Pikachu (002/S-P): Japanese Promo Guide and Value

Shibuya's Pikachu: A Location Promo with Cultural Roots

Shibuya's Pikachu (002/S-P) was distributed in November 2019 to celebrate the grand opening of Pokemon Center Shibuya. Customers visiting any Pokemon Center or Pokemon Store in Japan during the opening period received this Lightning-type promo featuring the Pokemon Center Shibuya logo printed on the card itself.

The choice of Shibuya for a flagship Pokemon Center makes sense culturally. Shibuya is one of Tokyo's most prominent commercial districts, known for its youth culture, fashion scene, and the iconic Shibuya Crossing.

The Artwork

The card's illustration captures Shibuya's street art culture with Pikachu holding a spray paint can, positioned as if tagging a wall. It's a playful nod to the district's urban aesthetic and creative energy. The artwork moves beyond standard Pikachu poses to create something location-specific, you wouldn't mistake this for a generic promo. The holographic treatment and Pokemon Center Shibuya branding reinforce the card's commemorative nature.

Market Position

Shibuya's Pikachu occupies an interesting space as an entry-level Japanese promo. PSA 10 examples currently trade in the $375-$510 range (as of publishing this article), while PSA 9s can be found for $50-$150. This puts it well below premium Pikachu promos but above mass-distributed cards.

For collectors interested in Japanese location promos or Pikachu cards specifically, this represents an accessible starting point. The combination of cultural significance (Shibuya district + flagship store opening), limited distribution window, and recognizable character creates lasting collectible interest without the four-figure barrier to entry that many sought-after Pikachu promos command. It's a good start for a location-specific Pikachu binder!
